Why do you want to study this course or subject?
Two winters ago my team was asked to remove a line of mature ash from a park avenue because of dieback. I had planted and watered younger trees in that park, so the felling stayed with me, but what actually changed my thinking was the discussion afterwards about what to plant in their place. Nobody in the room could answer it confidently. The questions were about soil, exposure, likely disease pressure and what the site might be like in forty years, and they were scientific questions rather than matters of taste. I realised I had spent years handling trees without understanding the biology and measurement behind decisions about them.
Since then I have read around the subject with more purpose. Peter Thomas's Trees: Their Natural History helped me make sense of things I had only observed, such as why some species tolerate shade as seedlings and others need open ground, and how growth rings record more than age. I have also followed Forest Research material on ash dieback and on diversifying species choice, which made clear how much depends on long-term trial data rather than single observations. What appeals to me about forest science specifically is that it works across timescales I cannot see from a wheelbarrow: yield models, stand dynamics, soil carbon, genetics and the slow consequences of a planting decision. I want to be able to contribute to those decisions with evidence rather than instinct, and to understand silviculture properly, including the economics and the mensuration that many people find dry and I find genuinely interesting.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I left school at sixteen with GCSEs, including grade B in Biology and grade C in Mathematics, and went straight into work. Returning to study was a considered decision rather than a sudden one, and I am now in my second term of an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science at my local college, studying biology, chemistry and mathematics units in the evenings.
The biology units have been the most directly useful, particularly plant transport, photosynthesis and ecological sampling. For an assessment I carried out a quadrat and transect survey on a scrubby edge of common land near my home, comparing species frequency at increasing distance from a footpath, and had to think carefully about sample size and about the difference between a pattern and a proven cause. Chemistry has been harder, and I have had to rebuild my understanding of moles and equilibria from the beginning, which I now find helpful when reading about soil pH and nutrient availability. Mathematics has been the real gain. I had assumed I was poor at it; working through logarithms, gradients and basic statistics at my own pace has shown me that I was simply out of practice. I have made a habit of hand-plotting data before using a spreadsheet, because it forces me to notice outliers.
Studying while working full-time has taught me to plan properly. I keep a weekly timetable, submit work ahead of deadlines where I can, and use the college's maths support drop-in rather than struggling on alone. I am confident these habits will carry into a degree.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
My paid work has been practical and outdoor. I spent six years in a garden centre, latterly advising customers on tree and shrub selection, which taught me to ask about soil type, drainage and space before recommending anything, and to explain plainly why a choice might fail. For the past two years I have worked with a council grounds team: mowing regimes, hedge cutting, young tree maintenance, watering during dry spells and recording losses. I have learned how much of establishment success comes down to unglamorous detail, such as removing ties before they girdle a stem, and how rarely follow-up records are kept well enough to learn from.
On Sunday mornings I volunteer with a community woodland group on a former allotment site. We have planted mixed native whips over three seasons, and I now help run the survival counts each spring. Last year I suggested we record cause of failure alongside numbers, and the resulting notes showed more damage from vole activity in the longer grass than we had expected, which changed our mowing around the guards. I also helped a volunteer with limited mobility work a section by bringing tools to her rather than moving her around the site.
Outside this I walk a good deal and have been keeping a notebook of tree measurements in a local wood, using a tape for girth and a homemade clinometer for height, mostly to see how consistent I can be. My work has also given me physical stamina, early starts and tolerance of poor weather, which I understand fieldwork will require.
