Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My allotment half-plot came with heavy clay, a rusted water butt and a neighbour who told me nothing would grow in it until I added grit. Two years on I can predict which end of the plot will still be waterlogged in March, and I understand why: the soil texture triangle I met in Geography is the same thing I can feel between my fingers when I roll a wet sample. That overlap between what I study and what I dig is the reason I want to read Agriculture rather than plant science or geography alone. I am interested in decisions rather than mechanisms on their own, and farming is a subject where a biological fact only matters once somebody has to choose a cultivar, a drilling date or a stocking rate with imperfect information and a fixed budget. Working at the garden centre has shown me how much of growing is logistics: stock ordered too early, bedding plants held too long, customers asking for a hedge that will cope with a wet corner. I have become more curious about the scale-up of those same problems. Nitrogen is a good example. In Chemistry I learned the Haber process as an equilibrium problem; on the allotment I use very little bought fertiliser and rely on beans and a compost bay; on a real arable farm the question is how much to apply, when, and what the losses to leaching and volatilisation cost in both money and water quality. I would like to study that properly, with soil science, crop physiology and farm business management taught together, and with fieldwork on commercial units rather than only in a laboratory. Longer term I am drawn towards agronomy or advisory work, where the point is to give a grower a defensible recommendation and be honest about its uncertainty.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Biology has been the most useful of my subjects for this course. The plant transport and photosynthesis topics gave me the vocabulary for what limits yield, and the ecology unit made me think about farmland as a managed ecosystem rather than an interruption of one. Our required practicals trained me in something I had been doing badly on the allotment: controlling variables and recording as I go, rather than reconstructing from memory. Geography has been equally important. The coursework skills unit covered sampling strategy and the difference between a result and a significant result, and our fieldwork on a river catchment introduced me to sediment and nutrient transport, which I now read about in an agricultural context. Chemistry underpins both, particularly soil pH, cation exchange and the behaviour of pesticides, though I have found it the hardest to keep on top of and have had to be disciplined about rewriting notes weekly rather than revising in blocks. Outside the syllabus I read the farming press in the garden centre staff room and have worked through Dieter Helm's Green and Prosperous Land, which argues for paying land managers for public goods such as clean water and habitat; I found the case persuasive but wanted more detail on how you measure delivery on an individual farm, which is a question I would like to take into my degree. I also completed an online short course in soil health, which was useful mainly for making me realise how much of soil biology is still uncertain. My college tutor group ran a study skills project in which I taught two Year 12 students how to build a results table before starting an experiment, and explaining it forced me to be clearer myself.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
The independent work I am most pleased with is small. Over two seasons I compared broad bean spacings on my allotment, using three rows at 20 cm and three at 35 cm within the plant, with the same variety, sowing date and compost. I counted pods per plant and weighed the shelled yield per row on kitchen scales. The wider spacing gave more pods per plant but slightly less total weight per metre of row, and the closer rows suffered noticeably more chocolate spot in the second, wetter year. Six rows is not an experiment that proves anything, and my two seasons differed so much in rainfall that I cannot separate spacing from weather. What it did teach me was how quickly confounding creeps in, and why replication and randomisation matter rather than being examination words. Through my young farmers club I worked with one other member to organise a soil pit demonstration on a member's family farm. My share was the practical end: agreeing a date, arranging the digger, writing a short risk assessment for the college to sign off, and preparing laminated cards on the horizons we expected to see. Twenty-two people came and the visiting agronomist did the explaining; my job was making sure it happened, and it did. At the garden centre I serve customers, water under glass and handle deliveries, which has made me accurate about plant names and honest when I do not know something. I also spend a Saturday morning each month helping with stocktaking at a farm shop, counting eggs, vegetable boxes and wastage, which has given me an unglamorous view of margins. At home I look after two borrowed hens and keep the compost bays turned.
