Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Packaging is the part of engineering most people handle every day and almost never think about. I started thinking about it while filling shelves on Saturdays: which trays crack when stacked, why some lids need two hands and a knife, which sealed films peel cleanly and which tear across the middle. A tray of tomatoes that arrives bruised has failed twice over, because the fruit is wasted and so is the plastic that was meant to protect it. That tension between protecting a product and not overspending on material is what makes the subject interesting to me rather than simply practical.

My A levels have pushed me towards the materials side of engineering. In Chemistry I enjoy polymers most: the way branching and crystallinity change how a plastic behaves, and why a material that is excellent at keeping oxygen out may be poor at keeping moisture out, so barrier films end up as layered structures. That leads directly to the recycling problem I keep reading about, since multi-layer laminates are difficult to separate into useful streams. I would like to understand properly where the trade-offs actually sit, instead of assuming that one material is always the villain.

I am also drawn to the fact that packaging engineering is not purely a materials discipline. It involves mechanics and structures, filling and sealing processes, distribution testing, labelling rules, and a lot of thinking about how an ordinary person opens something in a hurry. In Product Design I have learned how much of a design decision is about the user's hands and expectations, and how a small change to a tab or a score line alters behaviour. A degree that brings polymer science, process engineering and design together is exactly the combination I want, and I hope to work in food or pharmaceutical packaging development afterwards, where the consequences of getting the barrier and the seal right are most direct.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Chemistry, Maths and Product Design at A level, which between them cover most of the foundations the course builds on. Chemistry gives me the structure and bonding, thermodynamics and organic chemistry that underpin polymer behaviour; Maths supplies the calculus, mechanics and statistics I expect to use in stress calculations and in interpreting test data. I have found it useful to see where topics overlap, for example using logarithms and rates work in Chemistry alongside similar functions in Maths rather than treating them as separate subjects.

Product Design has been the most hands-on part of my education. My coursework project is a reusable container for carrying a packed lunch by bicycle, which sounds simple until you test it. I made card and then 3D-printed prototypes, weighted them, and dropped them from saddle height onto a paving slab repeatedly to see where the lid failed. The early hinge cracked every time at the same corner, so I thickened the section and moved the pivot, and I learned to record each trial properly instead of relying on memory. I also had to justify my material choice in the folder, which sent me reading about polypropylene and how living hinges work.

Beyond the syllabus I completed an online short course on the circular economy and read parts of Mike Ashby's materials selection work in the school library, which changed how I approach design questions: choosing a material is about ranking properties against constraints, not searching for the best one overall. I follow trade coverage of packaging regulation, including the shift towards fibre-based alternatives and the practical difficulties of making paper trays that survive chilled distribution. I keep a notebook of packs I have taken apart at home, noting layers, closures and any recycling instructions, and comparing what the label claims with what our local collection actually accepts.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Through a link between my sixth form and a local food packing company I spent two supervised days with their quality team. I was an observer rather than a helper with any authority, and much of the time I stood at a safe distance in a high-visibility jacket watching a tray sealer run. A technician showed me how they check seal integrity, including a dye test on sample packs to reveal channels in the seal, and explained that a fold or a stray fleck of product in the seal area is enough to cause a leaker. I was allowed to record weights on a check sheet under supervision and to sit in on the morning meeting where overnight rejects were discussed. What struck me was how much of engineering quality is routine measurement and clear records, and how film tension and temperature settings were adjusted from evidence rather than instinct. I asked about switching to a more recyclable film and was told it had been trialled but sealed less reliably at line speed, which was a useful reminder that sustainability changes must survive the factory floor.

My Saturday job on a supermarket deli counter has taught me more than I expected. I weigh, wrap and label to order, handle allergen separation and date codes, and deal with customers who are in a rush or unhappy. Vacuum packing cheese properly takes practice, and I have seen how poor sealing shows up hours later. Working a busy counter has made me calmer under pressure and better at explaining things simply.

Outside school I volunteer at a monthly repair and recycling stall at our library, mostly sorting donated items, testing small appliances for the person doing repairs, and talking to visitors about what our council collects. I usually end up explaining why a black plastic tray or a crisp packet is awkward to recycle, which forced me to learn the answers accurately. I also play in a local netball team as centre, where fitness and communication matter more than individual flair, and I have kept up piano to Grade 6, which has given me the patience to work at something difficult over months. Together these commitments have made me organised with my time and comfortable working alongside people much older than me, which I expect to matter on a laboratory or placement-based course.
