Why do you want to study this course or subject?
For six years I made curtains and roman blinds in a small workshop in Derby, and most of my working problems were really materials problems. A linen blend that hung beautifully in the showroom would relax by a centimetre or two after a fortnight in a sunny bay window. A flame-retardant finish specified for a care home would stiffen an otherwise soft fabric so much that the pleats sat badly. I learned the practical fixes quickly, but I could not explain why they worked, and that gap started to bother me more than I expected. Later, working in a dry-cleaning and alterations shop, I saw the same questions from the other end: shrinkage, dye bleeding, pilling on cheap knitwear, the way a poorly bonded interlining bubbles after one wash. I began reading about fibre structure and finishing chemistry in the evenings, and found that the answers were chemistry and physics rather than trade folklore. Crystalline and amorphous regions in a polymer, moisture regain, the difference between a mechanical and a chemical crease-resist treatment: these explained things I had only ever handled. Textile technology attracts me because it sits between laboratory work and manufacture. I want to understand fibre and yarn structure, dyeing and finishing processes, and testing standards properly, and to work eventually in technical development or quality for a manufacturer, where decisions about durability, comfort and waste are made before a fabric ever reaches a workroom.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science, taking chemistry, biology and mathematics. Chemistry has been the most directly useful and the most demanding. Organic chemistry gave me the language for polymers: I can now look at the repeating unit of polyester or polyamide and see why one hydrolyses under certain conditions and the other absorbs more moisture through its amide groups. Studying intermolecular forces made sense of something I had observed for years, which is why cotton takes up water so readily while polypropylene will not wet out at all. My laboratory assessments have included titrations and a practical on the effect of temperature on reaction rate, and I have become careful about recording uncertainty and repeating measurements rather than trusting a single result. Maths was where I had to start almost from scratch, having left school after GCSEs. Rearranging formulae and handling logarithms took a term of steady work with past papers and a study group, and I now use graphs and percentage calculations confidently, which I know I will need for concentration, absorbency and tensile data. In biology I wrote an assignment on protein structure that turned out to be useful background for wool and silk, since I could compare keratin's disulfide cross-links with the way synthetic fibres are set by heat. Returning to formal study as an adult has taught me to plan deadlines around shift work and to ask for help early.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
My workshop years gave me practical familiarity with fabric behaviour that I hope will support laboratory and design work. I cut and machined to tolerances where a few millimetres showed, worked from specification sheets, and dealt directly with suppliers when a roll arrived off-shade or with a visible weaving fault. Handling complaints taught me to investigate rather than guess: I once traced repeated puckering on a blind range to the interlining being applied at too high a press temperature, which I confirmed by testing offcuts before we changed the setting. In the dry-cleaning shop I learned care labelling and solvent choices, and got used to explaining to customers why a garment could not safely be restored. Both jobs involved early starts, stock checks and covering for colleagues, and I have kept a Saturday job in a fabric shop while studying. Outside work I help run a weekly sewing group at a community centre, where we repair clothes and teach basic mending. Preparing short demonstrations on darning and patching has made me better at breaking a process into steps, which helped when I explained buffer solutions to classmates who had missed a session. I swim twice a week, mostly to clear my head before evening study. I am used to being on my feet, to being accountable for my own output, and to learning from people more experienced than me, and I expect all three to matter in a technical degree.
