Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The thing that first held my attention was not a fast car but a slow one. Our school's Greenpower car kept losing speed on the long bend at the back of the circuit, and the driver said the steering felt heavy. It turned out the front wheels were fighting each other: our toe setting was wrong, and we had been scrubbing away energy we could not spare from a 24-volt battery pack. Measuring the geometry with string lines and a tape, adjusting it, and then watching the lap times settle two seconds lower taught me more about engineering than any single lesson. A vehicle is a set of compromises held in tension, and small decisions about angles, masses and materials decide how it behaves.

Automotive engineering appeals to me because that reasoning has to be done under real constraints: cost, weight, safety, legislation and now the demands of electrification. Working on the parts counter has shown me the unglamorous end of this. Customers bring in warped brake discs, cracked coolant expansion tanks and wheel bearings that have failed at 70,000 miles, and I have become curious about why particular components wear as they do and how a designer might have predicted it. Reading about the shift to battery vehicles, I am struck by how much of the problem is packaging and thermal management rather than propulsion itself: where mass sits, how heat leaves a pack, how a floor structure absorbs a side impact when it also houses the cells.

I want a degree that combines mechanics, materials, thermofluids and control with hands-on vehicle work, because I learn best when a calculation has to survive contact with a spanner. In the longer term I would like to work in chassis or powertrain development, ideally somewhere I can stay close to testing.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels in Maths, Physics and Design and Technology have been chosen deliberately. In Maths I have found calculus and mechanics the most useful, particularly differentiating to get from displacement to velocity and acceleration, and resolving forces on inclined planes, which is essentially what a suspension arm experiences. Physics has given me moments, energy transfer and electric circuits; when our Greenpower team argued about whether to run motors in series or parallel, I could actually work through what would happen to current draw rather than guessing.

Design and Technology has been the subject that ties the others together. My coursework project is a modular tool tray for a kart trolley, developed after watching mechanics at the club lose sockets under the bodywork. I produced hand sketches, then CAD models, tested three tray materials for stiffness and impact resistance, and made prototypes in the workshop using the laser cutter and a vacuum former. Documenting the iterations honestly, including the version that flexed too much when loaded, was a useful discipline. The project received a commendation in my school's internal engineering competition, judged by a local manufacturing employer.

Alongside lessons I have worked through problem sets from a first-year engineering textbook borrowed from my college library, mainly on statics and free-body diagrams, and I follow technical explanations of racing regulations and of how manufacturers approach crash structures. I have also taught myself enough Fusion 360 to model assemblies rather than single parts, which forced me to think about tolerances and how components actually go together on a line rather than just on screen.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

I have volunteered at my local kart club for two years, mostly on race days. I help with pre-race checks under supervision: chain tension, brake pad thickness, kill-switch operation, and making sure ballast is properly secured. I am not a qualified scrutineer, but being alongside experienced ones has taught me how methodical inspection has to be, and how often a problem is something simple that someone has assumed is fine. Last season I rebuilt a seized rear hub with a member's guidance, learning the difference between reading about press fits and dealing with one that will not move.

My Saturday job on the trade counter of a car parts shop has developed skills I did not expect to matter. I look up parts by registration and engine code, which means being accurate about variants and specifications, and I have to explain to customers why a cheaper pad set may not suit their vehicle. Dealing with someone frustrated about a delayed delivery has taught me to stay calm, be specific and follow up. I was asked to help train a new weekend assistant on the catalogue system, which I took as a sign that my manager trusted my attention to detail.

The Greenpower team also taught me about working to a deadline with other people. I led the aerodynamics and bodywork group: four of us cardboard-modelled nose shapes, chose one, and built it in fibreglass over a foam plug, which took far longer than planned and taught us to budget time for finishing work. I keep a repair log for my own bicycle and have rebuilt its wheels, truing them by ear and gauge. Outside engineering I play in a community brass band, where rehearsing weekly for concerts has made me comfortable practising something patiently until it is right.
