Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My Design Technology coursework last year was a folding trailer for a bicycle, and the part that took the longest was not the design but the joints. I had sketched neat corner connections without thinking about how anyone would actually make them. In the college workshop I was shown MIG welding on mild steel offcuts, and my first attempts were lumpy, undercut, and burnt through on the thin tube. What struck me was that the failures were not random: too much current here, too fast a travel speed there, a gap that let the arc wander. Somebody had already worked all of this out properly, and there was a body of knowledge behind what looked like a craft skill. Welding engineering appeals to me because it sits exactly where my strongest subjects meet. Physics explains the heat input and why a weld cools at different rates in different places; materials science explains why that cooling changes the structure of the steel near the joint; and design decides whether the joint is in a sensible place at all. I would like to understand distortion and residual stress rather than just working around them, and to learn how joints are specified, inspected and qualified for things that genuinely matter, such as pressure equipment and structures. I want a degree where calculation and manufacture are not separate activities, and where I am expected to know how something will be made before I claim to have designed it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying A-level Physics, Mathematics and Design Technology, which together have given me a useful mixture of analysis and making. In Physics, the topics on materials and thermal energy have been the most relevant: Young modulus, tensile testing, stress and strain, and specific heat capacity now mean something concrete to me, because I have seen thin steel sag under a torch. Mechanics in Maths has taught me to set out forces and moments clearly, and the statistics unit has made me more careful about how much a small sample of test results actually tells you. Design Technology has been where I learned to work to a tolerance instead of to a guess. For my trailer project I produced drawings, chose 25mm square mild steel section, made a simple jig from plywood and clamps to keep the frame square, and kept a build log recording which settings produced acceptable beads on 2mm wall thickness. I also had to record risk assessments for fume extraction and eye protection, which was my first proper contact with standards and procedure rather than improvisation. Outside lessons I have been reading about arc processes and about non-destructive testing, and I followed a short series of technical articles on why dye penetrant inspection finds only surface defects. I also completed an online introduction to engineering materials, which covered phase diagrams for iron and carbon more slowly than I could have managed alone.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On weekday evenings I look after my two younger brothers while my mother works late shifts, which means cooking, homework supervision and getting them out of the house on time in the morning. It has made me organised out of necessity: I plan my own revision around fixed commitments rather than hoping for free time, and I have learned to explain things patiently to someone who is not interested yet. Once a month I help at a community repair café in a church hall, mostly on lamps, kettles and garden tools. I am not the person who diagnoses circuit boards, but I strip, clean and reassemble items, find replacement screws and cable, and talk to owners about whether a repair is worth doing. Watching the experienced volunteers has taught me that inspection comes before action, and that a visible crack in a cast handle is a reason to stop rather than to glue. My Saturday job at a builders' merchant has been an unexpectedly good education in materials. I load rebar, lintels and mesh, read delivery notes, and answer questions about which fixings suit which base. I have learned the difference between what customers ask for and what they need, and I have become used to working safely alongside forklifts. I also swim with a club twice a week, which keeps me disciplined about turning up when I would rather not. I am ready for a course with long workshop days and written work to follow.
