Why do you want to study this course or subject?
What draws me to creative technologies is the point where a piece of code stops being text on a screen and starts behaving like a material. I noticed this properly while making a simple particle system in Processing for my Computer Science coursework research: I had written the maths for the movement, but I still had to sit and watch it, adjusting numbers until the drift felt like dust rather than falling gravel. That kind of judgement is not really programming and not really drawing, and it is the work I want to get better at. I like that the field refuses to settle. Real-time engines now do things that used to be rendered overnight, and tools such as Blender's geometry nodes let someone build a system that generates variations rather than one fixed model. I find that more interesting than authoring a single finished image, because it means designing rules and then negotiating with the results. I am also curious about interaction as a design problem in its own right, since an installation or a game has to teach people how to use it without instructions, and most of the time it fails quietly rather than obviously. I want a degree that keeps technical study and studio practice in the same room, so that I learn shaders, physics and pipelines alongside composition, sound and how an audience actually behaves. Studying this at degree level appeals because I need structure I cannot give myself: briefs with constraints, critique from people who will say when something looks muddy, and time to work on projects longer than a half term. In the longer run I would like to work on interactive exhibits or on the tools side of games, building the things other people make work with, though I am aware my sense of the industry is still forming.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels feed into each other more than I expected. Computer Science has given me Python and a working grasp of data structures, and the non-exam assessment taught me to break a vague ambition into testable parts; my project is a small sequencer that triggers visual events from audio input, and most of my time has gone on making the timing reliable rather than on anything visible. Mathematics supports this directly. Trigonometry and vectors stopped being abstract once I needed to rotate a sprite around a point, and my work on sequences helped me understand why easing curves make movement feel deliberate. Art and Design has been the subject that changed how I judge my own work. Keeping sketchbooks forced me to document dead ends instead of hiding them, and a unit on printmaking taught me about editions and repeatable processes, which is oddly similar to setting up a render pipeline. My final piece used layered acetate and a torch to cast overlapping shadows, and that experiment became the idea behind the projection work I later made digitally. Outside timetabled lessons I completed an online course in real-time graphics fundamentals and worked through tutorials on Unity's shader graph, keeping notes on what I did not understand so I could return to it. I have read The Art of Game Design by Jessie Schell, which pushed me to think about a player's experience rather than my features list, and I follow developer write-ups on optimisation because seeing the constraints makes the finished work more impressive. My teachers have noted my reliability with deadlines, and I was asked to demonstrate software to Year 10 students choosing options.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For our school open evening I proposed an interactive display for the technology corridor. Using a borrowed projector, a webcam and a laptop, I built a piece where visitors' silhouettes disturbed a flowing pattern on the wall. The first version only worked in near darkness, so I rewrote the detection to compare each frame against a slowly updating background, which made it usable under the corridor lights. I also learned to hide the failure states: when tracking dropped out, the pattern simply carried on flowing rather than freezing. Around two hundred people passed through that evening and the head of department asked me to run it again in the summer. At the library digital making club I meet weekly with a mixed-age group. I have helped younger members debug microcontroller projects, which has been good practice in explaining ideas without taking over the keyboard, and I contributed the lighting and sound cues to a group project for a community open day. My weekend job at a garden centre is not creative work, but it has been useful. Serving on the café counter during a busy bank holiday taught me to keep a queue moving while dealing with an order that has gone wrong, and I have become comfortable talking to people who are annoyed with me for something that is not my fault. I also spent two months learning the plant labelling system well enough to advise customers honestly, including saying when I did not know. That habit of admitting uncertainty has made critique easier to take. Outside all this I play bass in a band with friends, which mostly means counting bars and listening to everyone else, and I look after our neighbour's dog on weekday mornings. Between shifts, deadlines and the club I have learned to plan a week properly, and I expect to need that at university.
