Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I came to creative computing from the drawing side rather than the coding side. In Year 11 I was working on an art project about the canal network near my house, and I wanted the water in my design to move. My teacher suggested I look at generative art, and I ended up spending a half term learning Processing from online tutorials, building a sketch where hundreds of dots drifted along curves and left fading trails. It was the first time code felt like a material to me, something with a grain, rather than a set of instructions to get right. What holds my attention is the point where a technical decision becomes an aesthetic one. Changing a single number in a noise function turns a calm ripple into something violent; choosing to redraw the canvas instead of clearing it gives you a painting rather than an animation. I want to study a course that treats both halves seriously, where I can learn proper programming practice and graphics theory alongside design, sound and interaction, and where the work is made and shown rather than only described. In the longer term I am interested in interactive installations and the kind of software that sits behind exhibitions and public spaces, though I am aware that games, tools and web-based work all overlap with this. Studying a broad creative computing degree appeals to me precisely because I do not yet know which of those routes suits me best, and I would rather find out by building things across several of them than commit too early.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels give me the two sides of this subject. In Computer Science I have worked in Python and studied data structures, complexity and how memory is organised; my coursework project is a tool that reads a folder of images and generates a contact sheet with adjustable grids and margins, which taught me more about file handling and awkward edge cases than any exercise. Mathematics has been useful in ways I did not expect: trigonometry and vectors reappear constantly when positioning objects on screen, and studying sequences helped me understand why recursive patterns behave as they do. I have started reading around the algebra of transformations because rotating a shape about a point other than the origin defeated me for a whole weekend. Art and Design is where I develop ideas properly. I keep a sketchbook that runs alongside my digital work, with colour tests, thumbnails and notes on artists whose work I have seen at the Ikon Gallery. Being asked to justify compositional choices in a crit has made me far better at explaining my code projects too, because the questions are the same: what is this for, what did you try, why this version. My independent reading has included Casey Reas and Ben Fry's introduction to Processing, which I worked through with the exercises, and I follow the documentation for shaders more than I fully understand it, which I take as a sign of where I need teaching rather than tutorials.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past two years I have collected my younger brothers from primary school three afternoons a week and looked after them until my mother finishes her shift. It is ordinary work, but it has shaped how I plan projects. I get roughly ninety minutes of usable time in an evening, so I have learned to leave myself written notes about what I was doing and where I stopped, to commit changes before I lose my place, and to break a project into pieces small enough to finish. The twins are also honest testers. When I made them a simple maze game in Unity, one of them immediately walked into a wall and got stuck, which told me more about my collision detection than any amount of my own careful playing. On Saturdays I help at a computer club at our local library, mostly sitting with older adults who want to use email, photographs or video calls. Explaining the same idea three different ways until one lands has improved my patience and my language, and it has made me think harder about interfaces. Watching someone hesitate over an icon whose meaning is obvious only to the person who chose it is a useful corrective to designing for myself. Outside this I play badminton at a local club on Sunday evenings, which is the one part of my week with no screen in it, and I have been learning to cook properly from my grandmother, following her instructions exactly before daring to change anything. I would arrive at university used to managing my own time, comfortable being the least experienced person in a room, and keen to spend far more hours making work than I currently can.
