Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My Geography class spent a fortnight on flood management in the Severn catchment, and what stayed with me was not the engineering but the question of who pays when defences fail. I started reading about how insurers price properties in flood-prone postcodes, and found the Flood Re scheme, which spreads the cost of high-risk home insurance across the industry. It struck me that this is a deliberate decision about how a society shares losses, made through premiums and reinsurance rather than through law alone. That combination of measurement and judgement is what draws me to risk management. In Economics I enjoy the parts of the course where certainty disappears: expected values, asymmetric information, moral hazard. In Mathematics I like probability and statistics most, partly because they are the tools for saying something sensible about events that have not happened yet. Risk management appeals to me because it uses those tools without pretending they settle everything. A model can tell an organisation that a warehouse fire is unlikely; it cannot decide how much disruption the business is willing to tolerate, or explain the decision to the people affected. I want to study operational and financial risk, insurance markets and regulation together, because I have noticed that failures are usually described afterwards as failures of communication or incentives rather than of arithmetic. I would like to work in insurance or in a risk function within a large organisation, and I want a degree that treats uncertainty as a subject in its own right rather than a footnote.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels give me a useful mix for this course. Mathematics has taught me to be careful with probability: I have learned to check whether events are genuinely independent before multiplying, which is exactly the assumption that gets stress-tested in discussions of correlated losses. The statistics content, including sampling and hypothesis testing, has made me more sceptical about confident claims drawn from small datasets. Economics covers insurance markets directly, and my coursework essay examined why the market for flood cover in high-risk areas struggles without intervention. Writing it forced me to distinguish between a risk that is simply large and a risk that is uninsurable because the people most likely to claim are the most likely to buy. Geography contributes the physical side, including return periods for river flooding and why a one-in-a-hundred-year event can occur twice in a decade. I have also worked on presenting numbers clearly. For an Economics assessment I built a spreadsheet comparing household insurance costs under different excess levels, and learned that a chart with too many series persuades nobody. Outside the syllabus I have read Dan Gardner and Philip Tetlock's Superforecasting, which convinced me that breaking a vague question into smaller, checkable parts improves judgement, and I have started following the Financial Conduct Authority's consumer-facing publications to see how regulation is actually worded. I am comfortable with independent study and I keep a notebook of terms I meet in reading and then define properly later.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Three evenings a week I look after my younger brother while my mother is at work, which includes managing his asthma medication and knowing when a cough is worth a call to the out-of-hours service. Doing this has given me a practical sense of what a control looks like: we keep a spare inhaler in the kitchen drawer, check the expiry dates at the start of each month and keep the action plan on the fridge. None of it prevents an attack, but it reduces how bad things get, which is the distinction between avoiding a risk and mitigating one. On Saturdays I volunteer at a community food pantry, where I moved from packing bags to keeping the stock sheet. I record deliveries and use-by dates and flag items likely to go to waste so they can be offered first. After a fortnight when we ran short of tinned vegetables, I suggested tracking the four most requested items week by week rather than counting everything, which made the shortages easier to see in advance. It taught me that useful monitoring is usually selective. My part-time job at a garden centre involves till work and helping customers on the plant benches, and I have been trained in the manual handling and spill procedures for the compost area. Reading the risk assessment on the staffroom wall was the first time I saw hazards written down formally, with likelihood and severity scored, and I was surprised how much of it depended on judgement. I also play in a local netball team, where being goalkeeper has made me comfortable with responsibility for the last line of defence.
