Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My Design and Technology coursework asked me to solve a problem for a specific user, and I chose the queue at my college coffee bar, which is run by students at break times. I enjoyed sketching and prototyping a card-based pre-order system, but what stayed with me afterwards was the part the brief did not cover: the volunteers had to be persuaded to try it, the college needed to approve any signage, and the idea only survived because two of the regular servers liked it. A good design was maybe a fifth of the work. The rest was organisation, timing and convincing people that changing something was worth the inconvenience. That is the gap I want to study. Innovation management appeals to me because it treats invention as an organisational problem rather than a flash of insight, and asks why capable firms with money and talented staff still fail to adopt improvements that look obvious from outside. In Business I have looked at product life cycles and at how firms respond to new entrants, and I have been struck by how often the deciding factor is internal: who controls the budget, which department loses status, how failure is treated. I want to understand portfolio decisions under uncertainty, how intellectual property shapes what firms choose to share, and why some organisations manage to run small experiments cheaply while others cannot begin without certainty. I am drawn to a degree that mixes strategy and organisational behaviour with quantitative work, because the arguments I find least convincing are the ones based only on a memorable story about a single company.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying A levels in Business, Economics and Design and Technology. Business has given me the vocabulary I use most: I have written about growth strategies, break-even analysis and the difficulties of measuring the return on marketing spend, and I have learned to be careful with case studies that are chosen because they worked out. Economics has been the more demanding subject and the more useful corrective. Opportunity cost, sunk costs and the idea of externalities have changed how I read business decisions, and studying imperfect information helped me see why firms invest less in risky research than might be socially desirable. I also found the topic of barriers to entry genuinely interesting, because it explains how a slow incumbent can survive a better competitor for years. Design and Technology has taught me discipline in a different way. Iterating a prototype, recording each version honestly and justifying material choices against cost and durability has trained me to document work as I go rather than write it up favourably afterwards. My GCSEs include grade 8 in Maths and grade 7 in English Language, and I am continuing with maths informally by working through statistics problems, since I know quantitative methods form part of most management degrees. Alongside lessons I have read Tim Harford's Adapt, which argues for variation and selection rather than grand plans, and Eric Ries's The Lean Startup, whose emphasis on testing assumptions early I found persuasive though noticeably easier to apply to software than to anything with a physical supply chain. Reading the two together made me more sceptical of confident prescriptions.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I work Saturdays and some school holidays on the tills and in the plant area of a garden centre. It is not a strategic role, but it has taught me things I could not have read. Demand is wildly seasonal, and I have watched how staffing, watering rotas and stock ordering are planned around weather forecasts that are frequently wrong. When the company introduced handheld scanners for stock counts, the older members of the team were the quickest to find shortcuts with them, which surprised me and made me distrust easy assumptions about who resists new systems. I also learned that customers ask for advice constantly, and that the knowledge held by two long-serving colleagues is genuinely valuable and completely undocumented. At college I volunteer on the coffee bar rota, which is how my project began. After finishing the coursework I asked whether we could trial the pre-order slips properly, and we ran them for three weeks. Takings were not obviously different, but the queue at the second break shortened and we wasted fewer prepared sandwiches, so we kept a simplified version. Persuading people to fill in the slips was harder than designing them. I am also treasurer of the college film society, where I keep the accounts for licence fees and refreshments, and I have had to tell members that some ideas were unaffordable. Outside college I play in a local netball team and help my younger brother with his maths homework most evenings. Together these commitments have made me reliable with deadlines and comfortable working with people who do not share my enthusiasm for reorganising things.
