Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My economics teacher set us a task in Year 12 that I have not really stopped thinking about: explain why two shares in the same industry can move in opposite directions on the same day. The answers I found were more interesting than the question. Prices do not simply reflect what a company is worth today; they reflect what people believe about the future, how confident they are in those beliefs, and how much they dislike being wrong. Financial economics appeals to me because it takes that messy human activity and gives it structure, using probability, discounting and equilibrium ideas to say something precise about risk and return.
Reading John Kay's Other People's Money sharpened my interest. His argument that much financial activity is intermediation between financial institutions rather than between savers and real investment made me look more carefully at what markets are actually for. I also worked through parts of Burton Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Street, which made me more sceptical of the confident stock tips my friends repeat from social media. I am drawn to the fact that the efficient markets idea is contested rather than settled, and that behavioural evidence sits awkwardly alongside elegant models.
What I want from a degree is the mathematics to handle these questions properly. In class I can describe why a bond price falls when yields rise; I would like to be able to derive it, model it and test it against data, and to understand where the assumptions behind such models stop holding.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Mathematics is the subject I rely on most. Differentiation and series work has already turned up in my own reading, when I tried to understand how a stream of future dividends is valued, and statistics modules have given me a language for variance and correlation that makes portfolio ideas far less mysterious. I have taught myself to use the statistical functions in spreadsheets beyond what the syllabus requires, mainly so that I could calculate standard deviations for my club's mock portfolio rather than describe volatility vaguely.
A level Economics has given me the macro and micro grounding I expect to build on, particularly monetary policy and market failure. For my coursework-style research project I compared how UK households' saving behaviour was discussed in central bank commentary with what the household saving ratio actually showed, and learned to be careful about treating an aggregate figure as though it described a typical family. Geography contributes more than it might seem: work on development and on uneven investment flows has made me think about who bears risk when capital moves quickly, and it has taught me to interpret maps, tables and case studies without losing sight of the limits of the data.
I read the Financial Times weekend edition at work when the shop is quiet, and I follow the Bank of England's rate decisions closely enough to have opinions about them. Beyond the syllabus I have started working through introductory material on probability distributions, because I know that quantitative finance modules will expect fluency rather than familiarity.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I set up and now run the investment club at my college. We manage a mock portfolio of £10,000 and meet on Thursday lunchtimes; members pitch a company, we vote, and we record our reasoning so that we can review it a term later. Our recorded return over the last academic year was modestly positive, but the more useful outcome was discovering how often our reasoning was right for the wrong reasons. Keeping the minutes taught me to separate a good decision from a lucky one, and persuading eleven people to attend regularly taught me to prepare properly.
As treasurer of my badminton club I collect subscriptions from around forty members, pay the hall hire, and produce accounts for the annual meeting. When our court fees rose I put together three options for the committee, including a small increase for adults with concessions kept unchanged, and explained the cash position clearly enough that the decision took ten minutes. It was a small piece of financial reasoning with real consequences for people I see every week.
My Saturday job at a garden centre has been an unexpectedly good education in demand. I handle the tills, help with plant orders and deal with customers who want advice or a refund. I have watched stock decisions go wrong because the weather turned, and seen how discounting perishable stock is a judgement about expected revenue rather than a rule. Customer-facing work has also made me calmer under pressure and better at explaining numbers to people who do not want a lecture, which I think matters in this field.
