Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in biological psychology started with a question I could not answer from my A-level notes: why my father, who works rotating shifts at a distribution centre, could sleep for nine hours after a night shift and still feel wrecked, while I could run a hard session on six hours and feel fine. Reading around the topic led me from body clocks to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, melatonin, and the idea that behaviour has to be explained at several levels at once rather than picking one. That reframing is what draws me to the subject. I want to understand behaviour as something produced by tissue, chemistry and timing, but still shaped by what a person does and expects. Robert Sapolsky's Behave was useful to me because it refuses to stop at a single cause, tracing a behaviour back through seconds, hours, years and evolutionary time. I also found the limits interesting: reading about the reliability of some neuroimaging findings made me realise how careful you have to be about inferring a mental process from a pattern of activation. My Psychology course covers biological explanations, but only briefly, and my Biology course stops at physiology without asking what any of it feels like. A degree in biological psychology sits exactly where my curiosity does, and the methods side appeals to me as much as the content. I would like to work with hormonal and circadian measures, and eventually to research how shift patterns affect cognition and mood, because the people I know who work them are given very little useful advice.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels in Biology, Psychology and Mathematics have given me complementary preparation. Biology has been the most direct: the neurone and synaptic transmission work made later reading about neurotransmitters far easier to follow, and the practical endorsement taught me to record procedures precisely enough for someone else to repeat them. Psychology introduced me to research methods, which I enjoy more than I expected. Learning to separate what a study measured from what it claimed has changed how I read popular science, and I now look for sample sizes and control conditions before I look for conclusions. Mathematics has been quietly the most useful. Working through probability and statistics has made effect sizes and significance testing feel like reasoning rather than ritual, and I am comfortable with the algebra behind correlation. For my Extended Project I investigated whether chronotype questionnaires predict self-reported alertness, using a short survey of forty-two students at my college. The results were messy and the correlation weak, which taught me a good deal about self-report measures, response bias and the difference between a real finding and an underpowered one. My supervisor pushed me to discuss limitations properly, and writing that section was the part I learned most from. I also attend a weekly college science reading group, where I presented on the placebo effect and had to defend my interpretation to people who had read the same article differently.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

I have worked Saturday and Sunday shifts in a garden centre café for the past eighteen months, mostly on the till and the coffee machine. It is not a scientific job, but it has taught me to stay accurate and civil when it is busy, to train new starters patiently, and to manage my own time so that coursework still gets done. I also help at a junior session at my running club on Saturday mornings, warming up groups of eight to twelve children and explaining sessions in language they will actually follow. Explaining pacing to a ten-year-old is surprisingly good practice for explaining anything clearly. My own running is where the subject stopped being abstract. I have kept a training log for three years, noting sleep, resting heart rate and how sessions felt, and the patterns in it are what made me curious about physiological measures and their noise. At home I helped my father set up a simple sleep and caffeine record so he could see how his rest changed across his shift cycle, and we adjusted when he had his last coffee and how much light he got before bed. Nothing dramatic happened, but his notes became more consistent and he found the mornings after nights easier. Watching how much variation there was week to week was a better lesson in individual differences than any textbook example. Between the log, the reading and the café, I have learned to be persistent with small amounts of data and honest about what it shows.
