Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What draws me to applied sciences is the point where a measurement becomes a decision. In the pharmacy where I work, a fridge temperature log is not an abstract number: if it drifts above eight degrees, stock is quarantined and someone's prescription is delayed. That small daily routine made me curious about the science behind it, and the curiosity outgrew the job. I began reading properly, starting with Ben Goldacre's Bad Science, which sharpened how I read claims on packaging and in newspapers, and then working through the chemistry sections of my Access textbooks at the kitchen table. I chose a broad, applied course deliberately. When I looked at single-subject degrees I kept finding that the problems I care about sit between them. Water quality is chemistry, microbiology and a bit of hydrology at once; medicines handling involves stability, regulation and human behaviour. A course that teaches laboratory technique alongside biology, chemistry and data handling suits how I actually think, and it keeps options open while I find out which area I want to specialise in later. I am also returning to study with clear eyes. I know how long a term feels when you are also working, and I know that I concentrate better in the morning and should stop pretending otherwise. I want the structure of a degree, access to proper instruments rather than descriptions of them, and the chance to be taught by people who can tell me why a method exists and not only how to follow it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My Access to HE Diploma in Science covers biology, chemistry and mathematics, and I have taken the extra study skills units on scientific writing and referencing, which I needed. Chemistry has been the most demanding and the most rewarding: titration calculations felt impenetrable for a fortnight until I started writing out units at every stage, and now I use the same habit for dilutions and rate problems. In biology I enjoyed enzyme kinetics, partly because it explained something I had seen practically, namely why washing powders specify a temperature range. Our practical work is modest but genuine. I have carried out a titration to find the concentration of a diluted acid, used a colorimeter to build a calibration curve for copper sulfate solutions, and grown bacterial cultures on agar with streak plating, where my first attempt gave confluent growth and my second, more patient one gave countable colonies. Each practical ends with a written report, and I have learned to be honest about uncertainty rather than rounding a result towards what the textbook expects. Maths I am rebuilding from the ground up. I retook GCSE-level algebra material privately before the Access course and now work through logarithms and rearranging equations most weekends, because I would rather meet them again in first-year lectures as familiar tools. Outside the syllabus I read the Royal Society of Chemistry's news pages and have been following coverage of PFAS in drinking water, which has taught me how much of applied science is about detection limits and what counts as evidence for regulation.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Four years behind a pharmacy counter has given me habits that transfer directly to laboratory work. I check stock against expiry dates, record fridge temperatures twice daily, label accurately and follow standard procedures without shortcuts, because the consequence of a mislabelled box is real. I also learned to ask a second person to check something when I am uncertain, which is not weakness but ordinary good practice. Explaining instructions to customers who were worried or in a hurry taught me to strip jargon out of an explanation without making it vague, something I now use when writing up practicals. Since last spring I have volunteered with a river monitoring group. Once a month, in waders and usually in drizzle, I help take samples and run field tests for nitrate and phosphate using colour comparison kits, then record results on the group's shared spreadsheet. The kits are crude compared with laboratory methods, and that comparison is exactly what interests me: I can see the difference between a rough indicator and a quantified result, and I have started reading about ion chromatography as a consequence. I also help run the tea stand at the group's open days, which is less scientific but keeps the group funded. At home I look after my younger brother two evenings a week while my mother works late shifts, which has made me organised about planning study around fixed commitments. For myself, I keep a small allotment plot, mostly beans, garlic and too much courgette. Composting and soil pH are a slow, practical education in chemistry, and there is something useful in a hobby where results arrive on their own timescale rather than mine.
